Care Home for the Elderly Catford
Norman Architects have obtained planning approval from Lewisham Council to extend and refurbish ‘The Swallows’ residential care home for the elderly.
The scheme provides 14 additional bedrooms, each with en-suite facilities, together with the enlargement and improvement of communal and ancillary spaces. The additional accommodation is created by the acquisition, change of use, remodelling and refurbishment of the adjacent Victorian dwelling; together with a contemporary two-storey extension across the rear of both properties that integrates the enlarged facilities around a new central atrium.
The south facing rear elevation provides large areas of glazing; enabling residents’ rooms and communal areas to overlook and integrate with the landscaped gardens. The natural timber cladding in this location, which will weather to silver grey over time, seamlessly incorporates a series of automated shutters to help modulate solar gains and articulate the façade.
